Hyster N40ZRS:
Control Handle issues

I have two Hyster N40ZRS-14.5 Serial # A265N03167L and A265N03169L They only have 300-400 hours on them. Within a month of each other the Control handle started Malfunctioning. For example: you push and release the tilt up button and let go and it continues to move. or you push the side shift button and nothing happens, but you cycle it on and off and push the same button and it works fine...push it again and it doesn't. the forward and reverse functions work fine, it seems to only be in the hydraulic functions that fail in irregular patterns. I have the Standard driver Display and ran through diagnostics on the switches and it is showing on (1) and off(2) when I push the buttons sometimes, but other times it doesn't show that I am hitting the button. keeping the value of 0 The yellow Warning triangle ! lights up and it displays "End-of Stroke---Release switch" and this sometimes will display with my hand completely off the joystick.

when I first dealt with this a month ago, I was convinced it is the Control Handle, But Now that I have another truck doing the exact same thing...I am second guessing myself. I am waiting for the company to approve the purchase of the control handle, so if I am wrong, It would be great to know before we spend a billion bucks on a new handle. can someone out there help me verify what I diagnosed it as? Is there a Manufacture bulletin out there addressing this issue. it really seems odd for two trucks to be exhibiting the same fault. any assistance will be met with cheers and beers if we ever meet face to face.

No one knows everything...ask for help before you have to pay for that mistake.

The signal is on the canbus, this is low voltage through the twisted can high and can low wires. These joysticks do not need calibration. I have never seen this problem on low hour trucks. It sounds like a problem in the canbus wires, but you are not getting fault codes. The fact that there are no fault codes tells me the problem could be in the controller. The controller is the devise that reports faults and stores the faults. Have you checked the resistance in the canbus loop? It should be 60ohms. Maybe you are missing one of the resistors in the loop. If the reading is 120ohms you have an open resistor.

Thanks Brewski. Just to verify I am thinking correctly, The joystick controller only send low voltage signal, not necessarily Line voltage to the Master controller. if so what would be the likelihood of two Joystick controllers going bad versus two Joystick controllers. either option of repair looks like it will be costly so just trying to be able to pinpoint it as best possible. I was 100% confident in the first ones diagnosis, but after the second started acting up, it raised some flags for me.

The handle is a Canbus device. If you are not getting a fault code and not getting a function activated when a specific button is pushed it is either the handle or the master controller that has a problem. I would change the handle first, this is the wear item. If the handle does not fix the problem it has to be the master controller.
