Discussion:
Code 5M on 7400

HI guys,

Anyone happen to know what code 5M on a raymond 7400 means?

Only have one of these in our fleet, and no service manual to go by...

Driver claims truck threw a code, lost power steering and wouldn't respond to plugging input, and hit a pole.

I showed up, drove it around for an hour with no issues.

Only code retrieved from the incident is 5M.

Hoping the code tells me where to start looking because right now truck operates completely fine...

I'm not sure I understand that question.
Using the voltmeter from battery terminals to frame will usually give false results.
The truck frame must not have any current at all. If you have a dirty battery, where corrosion is between the frame and battery, current will flow. Raymond says to use an amp meter from positive then negative to frame. One miiliamp can cause problems. I've seen trucks at 100 milliamps that caused major damage to computers or drive amps. Before using a amp meter, try a 12 volt test light first. If it lights even for a second, dont use amp meter as it will burn the fuse. Use a 5 amp fuse in line to protect your meter. Check the truck for shorts as well. unhook bat, use ohmeter at truck connecter pos then neg, to to frame. Should be at least over 100 K ohms but normally 1 meg. Check the static strap with ohmeter on strap end then to frame. Need to see 10 thousand ohms. If open, the resister is blown.

Hi Raytech,

Thanks you very kindly for the info. Ended up ordering a service manual right away.
Battery checked out okay, but static strap was missing, replaced. seems fine, will keep an eye on it.

raytech, would you mind emailing me directly? i would like to ask you some questions privately,

These trucks can shut down or reset while driving. Please check the battery with MIN/MAX setting under load to ensure it's voltage doesn't drop below 30 volts under load. Static strap is still there, and, measure with ohmeter from strap to body for 10K resistance. Then check relay card under display for burned pins or fried relays. Remove the top cover and check all relay pins on card carefully. Second from left usually burns the female plugs. These relays should be changed if any weird codes appear as they are taxed heavily for electrical load and burn out. Hitting a bump will cause the ckt to open momentarily and the truck cuts out. If you see slight burned sockets, change the card. The EPO switch often failed on these, causing cut-out. The pins at the VM are often a source for intermittent codes. I would replace the relays if they are a few years old for sure...Raymond part 1-100-068
Lucky you only have one in your fleet!

Bluetooth is named after the 10th-century Viking king, Harald Bluetooth, who united warring tribes in Denmark and Norway. In 1997, Jim Kardach from Intel gave the name to the technology because of its ability to unite different communication protocols, just as Harald united various tribes.
