Discussion:
Caterpillar Reverse problem

Hi, I just joined today. I'm a welding shop owner and pretty mechanical.
I found a cat propane forktruck for $500. Only the seller says it loses reverse when it gets hot. I'm not sure of the model or anything, I'm going to look at it next weekend.
What should I look for when I check it out? I'd apreciate any advise, am I waisting my $$$ ?

ok, thanks guys. I sure dont need an other project/headache.
I desided to pass on it, and my shop landlord will let me use his electric rig for $40 more a month till I find one.

they are ok trucks but getting old
if the trans is that messed up what else is
plus it only has a capacity of 3000 lbs less if it has a sideshifter
not my choice for slinging around sheets of metal at a shop
if i owned a buisness i would finance something new and adaquate machine or at least a quality used one that on there prob would cost u a good buck or two ta fix so buy somethin or make a down payment on a machine that fills ur porpose and dosnt drain ur wallet

ive seen many 500 dollar deals go right in the crapper after i tell em they need thousands of dollars of work to make the machine run properly and not kill every1 in a wharewhouse or shop with CO lol
im from ny land of cheap rich ppl
i see that all the time id pass my friend

it prob b a good idea to have a salesman spec out a good used machine for u

Odds are it's not minor.
Probably a clutch pak. (IMO)

Cat makes a fine truck, so if you're willing to part with ~$4500 for a tranny rebuild then this might be worth it.

BUT

If it's the peugeot engine, then be wary.
They are expensive to repair/rebuild.

Thanks for the quick reply, Justin.
I just got back from getting the info on the model.
It's a T30D cushion tire.s.n.5-GB5422
Trans is type WG-80 s.n.22129 and was filled all the way up the dipstick and clear. We didnt start it up. I guess it's an 80's model. I asked again and he said it's fine till it get's hot and reverse quits. He gave me 3 shop guides and a big parts book to look at for the week.
I hope it's something minor.
Thanks, Brian

the best thig to do here is to get the model and serial for real help so post again after u look at it

if there is no data plate then look for the serial number stamped somewhere on the frame
newer cats have it by the battery tray older 1s are on the front cowling in the area of the right hand tilt cylinder as if ur sitting on the machine
these stamps are usually not hard to find but paint may be covering them if the macine has been sprayed over

first is it stick or auto (clutch or inching pedal)? [pedal on left]
clutch does not apply brakes inching does

if its auto check the fluid if its low look for where its leaking (main seals, radiator tranny lines, filters)
check for a misadjusted inching pedal as this can make the tranny slip

if its stick and a model example v50 check clutch adjustment and u can inspect the meat on the cluth easily via a plate over the clutch housing
some are oil cooled some are not

but b4 all that the age of the machine would prob decide where u go from there
cat has been makin forklifts for a very very long time
they were orig made under the name towmotor and that ended in the early 70s so stay away from them
also there are crossovers between towmotor and the cat brand name they start with model numbers 422s etc again stay away still in the 70s

after that was models like t40 and v40 with revision abcd and maybe e? not sure these are ok but are starting to get old as they were produced thru the 80s

after that they merged with mitsu in the early 90s those machines are model that start with gp (pnuematic) and gc (cusion[solid] tires) these id consider fixing depending on the overall condition and at a price like that prob worth fixin if major work is needed
