Discussion:
Brakes sticking when backing up - ok going forward

5-10 year lift.
Can't find model number for the lift
Propane
Smaller lift (2500# range)
The brakes prevent the lift from backing up. Ok going forward.
We are going to tear into tomorrow but wanted to know if anyone has any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!
Martin

Based on the symptoms you listed, sure sounds like a brake issue. There are different drivetrain problems that occur but they each have their own set of symptoms.

When buying anything with an existing issue- always extremely low ball your offer to cover any surprises. IE- the dragging brake shoe could have cut a ridge into the drum so deep that a replacement drum needs to be sourced- this could be in the 1,000 range just by itself.

Other than that, is there anything else that it could be like the transmission or drivetrain? The shifting from forward to reverse had no issues. I'm just trying to eliminate anything that could incur significant cost(More than $1000 to fix). Thanks for your help.

This model has conventional drum brakes- a broken spring would have the symptoms you describe. Also- if you do purchase the truck- be warned that the brake hydraulic system is filled with hydraulic oil- not DOT3 brake fluid. This makes a difference in the rubber composition of the wheel cylinders.

Toyota 42-4fgc25. Not that I could tell, but while there test driving, I didn't look for that specifically. Everything seemed normal except for reverse.

What make/model is the unit? When you drive forward & slightly hit the brakes- does the affected wheel have a tendency to lock up before the other?

I'm having this same issue with a forklift I am looking at buying. It would go forward just fine, but would drag the right front tire when in reverse. What did you find out about your issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would suspect broken brake shoe return springs. The model & serial number should be stamped into the frame on the right side, under hood assy (as seated on the lift). You will need these numbers t get any parts you may need.
