Discussion:
Brakes and Hydraulics

I have a 1993 Cat forklift. It has a leaky hydraulic hose that leaves a puddle when parked for a while. Recently the brakes quit working pretty much all at once. I am mechanical however have never worked on forklifts. Are the brakes a separate fluid system from the hydraulics like on a car? I assume they are but why did the brakes fail? I have seen no sign of brake fluid leaking and have had trouble locating a master cylinder. Thanks in advance for any help.

Depending on the model, that could have a master cylinder that uses brake fluid or hydraulic oil. You have to find the master cylinder and if it has a hose attached to the filler cap, it uses oil.
