Discussion:
becoming a forklift instructor?

I'm looking to become a forklift instructor in Scotland. If I become rtitb accredited how would I get work? I get the impression it's on a sub contract basis

RTITB, ITSSAR, AITT etc........doesn't really matter who you accredit with as all instructors face the hurdle of finding the work initially. Plenty of it about though, particularly in Scotland as there doesn't appear to be too much competition.

If you can get yourself trained by a local provider then you have a better chance of them taking you on localish if they think you are any good. Best to work for someone first to get the money in and then branch out as self-employed once you have the contacts. You can only work as a cat 1 for the same employer anyway until you get your cat 2. Get at least your BITA A1, A2, A5. A6. B1, B2 and D1 categories under your belt as soon as possible. These are in demand.

Get yourself over to Aberdeen and tout at the oil rig industry.....or those who supply it from the mainland. Plenty of MHE equipment in use.

You need to let people know you exist. As self employed the work will not find you initially.

Marketing.......business cards and flyers to every local business who use MHE. EVERYONE! Tell as many friends and family as possible. Ask them to spread the word for you amongst their own friends and family. Use Gumtree, craigslist and any other free advertising avenue you can find.

The best marketing tool is a website. That may sound a bit too much to begin with but it is definitely something you should consider down the line.

Hope that helps

Cheers

Go self employed and advertise yourself there are lots of instructors doing it for themselves

Fact of the week
At the opening ceremony of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1932, marching bands were instructed to walk out of step as they crossed the bridge. This unusual directive was given as a precaution due to concerns about the bridge's structural integrity during its early use.
