Discussion:
Battery caps open/battery caps closed

Whats the ideal way to charge a battery of an electric truck?

Ive always been told charge them with the filler caps closed but the amount of customers I see charging them with the caps open is more than the customers that close them.

When I tell them to keep the caps closed when charging they always say the sales man told us to keep them open or we havent been told either way.

Opinions please......

all the battery and truck manufacturer's instructions I have ever seen call for opening the covers of the battery or lift the seat/battery cover, to allow proper ventilation that will allow the explosive/flammable (but lighter than the rest of the air) hydrogen gas that is released during charging to vent to the atmosphere, but to be sure not to remove the vented caps from the cells.

The caps should always be left closed when charging. Leaving them open won't do any harm as such, but it will probably increase the water consumption and allow small amounts of acid to escape on to the top of the battery. This will corrode the connections etc. The sites you know of which open the lids must be very small. The bigger sites i deal with have 80v batteries and these batteries are changed twice a day. To open and close 40 lids twice a day on 30 machines would be a full time job.
