New remote-controlled RTGs arrive in Thailand

Hutchison Ports Thailand has received a new batch of electric remote-controlled rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes from Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry (ZPMC), bringing the total to 43 RTGs in use at its Terminal D.

Hutchison Ports Thailand (HPT) says the latest delivery forms part of Terminal D’s ongoing development plan to continuously upgrade its equipment and operational technology with modern, environmentally friendly innovations.

In January, HPT received eight new remote-controlled RTGs and four new remote-controlled super post-Panamax cranes at its the Thai port Laem Chabang Port (LCB) for use at Terminal D.

Hutchison says the remote-controlled quay cranes (RC QC) have an outreach of 24 rows, a height above rail of 53m, and a lifting capacity of 61 metric tons.

They are among the largest RC QCs operating in Thailand.

The remote control electric RTGs (RC eRTGC) are capable of stacking 1 over 6 containers in the yard, and have a lifting capacity 40 metric tons.

The RC eRTGCs delivered in January were the first RTGCs of their type to be delivered to a Hutchison Ports container terminal globally and were described by HTP as “a significant milestone for Thailand and the Hutchison Ports group”.

HTP says the new RC eRTGCs demonstrate its continued commitment to its “Green Port” strategy, which aims to reduce carbon emissions and promote the use of clean energy in container-handling operations.
