Discussion:
2FD25 hard start and blue smoke on cold engine

Hello

I have a problem with my forklift. It's 2FD25 Mistubishi no 11199, diesel engine 4DQ50 from 1973. When i try start engine, especially in winter days i must long time heat engine by candles and engine start hard. Also i see blue smoke from pipe when engine is cold. When engine is hot everything is ok engine start quick and smoke is invisible.
I do not know what's going on.

generally when a diesel puffs bluish smoke on starting when cold and not starting up immediatly, it's because of poor or no preheating in the glow circuit.
check the glow heater or glow plugs and make sure they are operational. (mitsu's usually have a glow plug on each cylinder mounted near the injector)

if you have blue smoke while running (after starting) it could be a fuel problem like bad injectors or a injection pump timing issue. Also could be poor air intake like a clogged air filter.

There could be other things causing this but these are the most common.

What give me result compression tests? For example if compression will be different on cold engine what this means?

Does your engine have glow plugs or an intake heater? It should have something to assist in cold starts.

The blue smoke indicates that the engine tolerances are over spec when the engine is cold- take compression tests when the engine is cold & again when warm & compare the 2.
