Austrian port operator Hafen Wien is already seeing benefits from the Liebherr LHM 280 mobile harbour crane which started operating last month.

Hafen Wien operates the largest free port in Austria and is continuously expanding to become one of the largest and most modern logistics centres on the Danube in Europe. In order to update its facilities, the company opted for a Liebherr LHM 280 mobile harbour crane capable of lifting 84 T and with an outreach of up to 40 m.

"Our new mobile harbour crane helps us to improve cargo handling efficiency," says Karin Zipperer, technical director of the port. "Thanks to its versatility and mobility, we are able to expand our service portfolio which is important for the future development of our port. This investment also strengthens the attractiveness of inland waterborne transport,"

Hafen Wien has been successfully operating a Liebherr LHM 1080 mobile harbour crane for more than 25 years.

The new machine is twice as strong as the old one and universally applicable. Although the LHM 280 is 55 m high and weighs 240 T, the crane is mobile and highly flexible.

The new cargo handling solution will be used for container handling andbulk handling as well as general cargo operation.

The port operator is not just focused on efficiency, but also concerned about emissions, and the LHM 280 is equipped with Liebherr's Pactronic hybrid drive system which regenerates the reverse power while lowering the load. In addition, the surplus power of the primary energy source is also used for charging the accumulator. The stored energy is transferred back to the system when the crane requires peak power during hoisting.

Liebherr estimates a 30% performance boost compared to a conventional machine with equal power rating. In addition, the company boasts a 30% reduction in emissions.
