A British jobseeker claims he was not allowed to sign up for a forklift driving course because his English and Mathematics qualifications left him over-qualified.

According to Nottingham Post, Callum Ward, 25, completed government-funded courses and exams in adult numeracy and literacy to improve his job prospects. He had been looking for full-time work since last year.

When he tried to apply for a free forklift course with Learning Zone in Castle Marina, Ward says he was turned away.

"Because I had already got my English and Maths, they said the government would not fund me because I am too qualified," he told the Post.

Nigel Hennessey from the Learning Zone said Ward was not over-qualified to be a forklift driver but was denied the forklift course because he had already taken the literacy and numeracy courses. The courses were funded from the same source, he said, and it was impossible for one person to obtain the same funding twice.

Following Post's enquiries, Working Links, the organisation responsible for Ward's English and Mathematics courses, said it would find the jobseeker another forklift driver course.
