Question: How do you move an object 10 feet deep, 15 wide, 9 feet high that weighs 48 tons?

Answer: With a huge lift truck.

This was the challenge faced by Syncrude mines shops when the need arose to handle 42 - 48 ton impactors without the use of overhead cranes.

The request was sent to various Canadian and international lift truck manufacturers.

Only Paling Transporter in Hamilton Ontario met the challenge with a 60 ton model specifically engineered to safely lift 60 tons at 48" load centre.

You may ask "why do we need a 60 ton forklift to lift a 44 ton load?

The answer lies in the size of the load being lifted.

Lift truck capacities are rated at lifting capacities at typical load centres. In this class of forklift the standard is 48" load centre IE the equivalent to having an 8 foot deep load sitting on the forks. The actual load depth of the impactor unit is 10.5 feet which moves the load centre away from the forklift reducing lift capacity. (Not unlike moving your body further out on a teeter totter). Paling determined a 60 ton forklift was the safe capacity required to compensate for the load centre challenge. A capacity graph on the side of the forklift helps operators determine capacities at various load centres depending on the load being handled.

11 foot forks had to be specially engineered and forged. They are equipped with remote controlled positioning to enable the operator to move them in or out to suit various load widths from inside the cab.

The lift truck will provide greater flexibility in lifting and transporting other extreme lifting challenges.

The lift truck is 100% electronically controlled with overload protection and various other safety features including emergency braking and steering in the event of power loss.

The drive train is manufactured using the best engine, transmission, drive and braking systems available in North America.

Paling Transporter is a 100% Canadian owned company with manufacturing facilities in Hamilton Ontario, Canada.
