The forklift truck engineers of tomorrow are learning the importance of regular chain inspections with the help of FB Chain's popular chain wear gauge.

Students at the City of Bristol college are using the gauges as part of their forklift maintenance course work. The students - from all over the country - spend a total of eight of weeks a year on block release at City of Bristol College as they work towards their NVQ Level 3 Modern Apprenticeship in Lift Truck Maintenance and Repair.

"Chain wear gauges are used by forklift truck and other materials handling equipment service engineers and technicians to track chain wear at each service. If a chain is shown to have worn excessively it must be replaced, or lives could be at risk so this is a key part of our students' training," says Geoff Tucker, an experienced lecturer at the college.

FB Chain's gauge is widely recognised as the most accurate, reliable and simple to use tool of its kind on the market. Its patented design incorporates an easily read scale that enables chain elongation - the most common cause of chain failure - to be measured to within one quarter of one percent.

""Most chain wear gauges only tell you if a chain is worn or not worn. Using the FB chain wear gauge makes it easy to decide if a chain could be dangerously worn out before the next service, leading to the equipment being operated hazardously," says Geoff Tucker.

"The FB gauge is extremely user friendly and I am sure that as they go forward in their careers our students will be loyal advocates of the instrument," he added.

This year, to celebrate FB Chain's 25th anniversary, the company has produced a number of limited edition 'Gold' Chain Wear Gauges and the apprentice scoring the highest market on the Introduction to Thorough Examination module of their course at City of Bristol college will receive one of the highly sought-after 'Gold' gauges.
