Don't miss out on the chance in 2013 to learn from thought leaders in workplace safety, at The Safety Show Sydney from 3-5 September, presented by the Safety Institute of Australia.

The three-day event will take place at the Sydney Showground, and feature more than 150 exhibitors providing safety solutions and services geared towards achieving real OHS results in a wide range of industries.

For a face-to-face insight into specific topics that will have a real impact on your company, be sure to attend the free seminars which are held at the show and sponsored by Workplace Access & Safety. Running at around 45 minutes each, the seminars provide a stream of inspiration, insights and essential information to ensure your workplaces are safe and compliant.

Each day of The Safety Show Sydney will feature six presentations covering an array of topics including how technology is changing the way we undertake onsite safety, emergency planning, contractor management, OHS program planning and funding, personal protective equipment industry updates, and an overview of the latest legislation, plus much more.

In announcing the speakers and agenda for the sessions, Tony Francis, Event Director of The Safety Show Sydney, expects the seminars to quickly reach capacity.

"Attendees of The Safety Show Sydney come from a wide range of industries, and we have tailored the free seminar program to ensure everyone who comes to the Show will come away from at least one session inspired and informed," he explains.
OHS representatives and managers will want to kick off the first day of the show with Brenton Hampson, National Sales Manager of Workplace Access and Safety, who will share the practical secrets behind planning and funding safety projects on worksites that senior management never see. A widely applicable and very popular topic, additional sessions are available on the second and third day.

For the chance to make a real difference in fall prevention, join in the Fall Prevention Industry Crisis Summit. Facilitated by Michael Tooma, Partner at Norton Rose Fulbright and featuring top industry representatives, this lively discussion panel will aim to lift the safety of fall prevention installations for both the installers and those who rely on this life-saving equipment.

Whether you are an installer, a user of fall prevention systems, or a site safety manager, have your say and be heard on the current standard of fall prevention installations, the risks facing installers and users, and what can be done to enhance the safety and compliance of fall prevention installations.

Following that, take hold of one of the most pervasive challenges in the workplace, as Michael Tooma presents a workshop on bullying.

"Bullying prevention [is] one of the biggest workplace management challenges of our times," he says.

"There are important legal developments in this area that anyone with managerial responsibilities cannot afford to miss. I look forward to seeing you at the show," says Tooma.

With new legislation allowing the Fair Work Commission to intervene in bullying matters and a draft code of practice, the landscape of bullying offences is experiencing a significant shift. Persons conducting a business or undertaking now have new legal WHS obligations in relation to bullying, and risk punishment under civil penalty clauses if they fail to do so.

This workshop will provide practical guidance on the legal obligations and strategies for preventing bullying, and is essential for anyone conducting a business or undertaking.

For PCBUs who are involved in contractor arrangements, the session on Contractor Management with Adrianne Strachan, Senior Consultant at the National Safety Council Australia, will start you on the journey in understanding your WHS legislative requirements and the expectations of the organisations engaging contractors.

With sessions on the first and third days of the show, the seminar will briefly describe WHS approaches to low risk, short term contracts to high risk and/or major construction works. The information provided will help organisations recognise their responsibilities and plan for activities such as monitoring, supervision, consultation, communication and reporting.

With ladders being a common sight around most industries, Carl Sachs' "Lethal Ladder" seminars reflect on a rethink of AS/NZS1657 and how this will have a significant impact on height safety around the country.

As the Managing Director of Workplace Access & Safety, Carl Sachs commissioned an exploratory study by Professor David Caple to challenge the assumptions underpinning safe design. Find out what the research revealed, and what it means for fall prevention.

"Workplace Access & Safety brings height safety back down to earth with the full spectrum of fall prevention equipment and services at The Safety Show Sydney. As Seminar Session sponsors and presenters, we're also looking forward to sharing the know-how visitors need to make workplaces safe," says Sachs.

Whether your organisation already utilises safety software, or you are looking to upgrade, start steering in the right direction with Adrian Manessis, Business Development Manager at myosh.

The seminar discusses what is safety management software and how to best implement software in your organisation. It goes on to discuss where people go wrong with implementations and how to best avoid the pitfalls. The seminar will also discuss features and functions of good safety management software and how to evaluate software including the use of mobile and new technologies.

How can organisations plan for emergencies in facilities, and what guidance and obligations are in place under Australian law and standards?

The seminar on AS 3745-2010 Planning for emergencies in facilities will bring you up to speed on emergency planning, training and response procedures. Introduced by Youssef Khalife, General Manager EH&S at Chubb Fire & Security, and presented by Eric Teuben, Trainer NSW/ACT of the Chubb Training Group, the seminar will run on days two and three.

If your operations involve the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), the seminar on PPE Standards will be invaluable. Richard Donarski, Team Leader Health & Safety Product Services at SAI Global, will introduce PPE Standards, and explore its implications and opportunities for your company or organisation. The session is available on the second and third days.

Helping site operators and managers stay on the leading edge of safety, Richard Gregory, Managing Director of Navace, will present on how new technology centred around smartphone Apps, Cloud and Live Reporting can help facilitate more efficient management safety, equipment and time.

The seminar, which runs on days two and three, will explore how a phone App can have a positive impact on the daily activity of a job site, its pros and cons, and how to implement the technology.

Explore the 'bottom up' approach to building a safety culture with Cristian Sylvestre, Managing Director of SafeStart. See how to quickly get individuals engaged in the safety process, and gain insight into a new perspective of incident causation, then see how everything fits together in a holistic combination to keep people safe.

With safety thought leaders presenting on a wide range of topics, the free seminar program at the Safety Show Sydney has something for every industry. Whether you're in the warehouse, out on site or in the office, the insights and solutions from the sessions at The Safety Show Sydney will be an invaluable resource to help keep your workplace safe.

Fact of the week
In March 2002, identical twins in Finland died on the same day in similar accidents within hours of each other. A 70-year-old man was killed by a truck while cycling; hours later, his twin brother was killed by a truck on the same road, about a mile away, before the family had been informed of the first accident.
