Forklift safety issues around operators, workers awareness, traffic management:

One safety tool that can assist in mitigating the risks of accidents is a proximity alert system. It is a solution that alerts workers and operators when a worker is in a proximity to the forklift.

These systems are designed to detect the presence of workers in close proximity to forklifts. Among the commonly used safety proximity detection systems are camera-based systems and those based on tags and receivers. Each type has its own set of advantages and disadvantages, and understanding their differences is crucial in determining the most suitable system for a specific site or workplace.

Camera-based proximity detection systems rely on cameras to identify the presence of people within a given area. They require a direct line of sight to detect workers. However, they may have limitations in certain scenarios, such as when workers are in crouched positions, blind spots, during low or no-light conditions (such as dusk, dawn, overcast, night time), or in adverse weather conditions (such as snow, rain, fog, or dust). These systems do not require the use of receiver tags. It is worth noting that camera-based systems can be expensive to install and maintain. Additionally, privacy concerns may arise as these systems capture images and videos. Generating reports on near-miss incidents, telematics, Data-Driven Safety, and general behaviour may also require the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in many cases.

On the other hand, safety proximity detection systems based on tags and receivers utilise signals to detect the presence of people. These systems rely on tags/beacons that are provided to workers within the workplace. These tags/beacons transmit signals that can be detected by smartphones or tablets equipped with the necessary receiver capabilities. When a device comes within range of a tag/beacon, the system can determine the location of the beacon and trigger an alert through audio and visual means. Compared to camera-based systems, safety proximity solutions based on tags/beacons are generally less expensive to install and maintain. They are also more suitable for use in areas where privacy is a concern, as they do not capture images or videos. Moreover, generating reports on near-miss incidents, telematics and Data-Driven Safety is easily accessible with these systems.

Tags/beacons-based systems are easier to set up, offering an additional layer of safety protection for sites already utilizing camera-based proximity detection systems.

Pervidi- Proximity detection solution:

How does it work?

The Pervidi Proximity Alert System is comprised of only 2 components:

  • A sensor/alarm/visual unit attached-to or located-in the forklift;
  • A personal tag that is either attached to hard hats or worn by workers.

When a worker approaches the equipment, the Proximity Alert System notifies the operator that a worker is nearby.  Notifications include: Visual alert, loud sound / alert and device vibration.

New technologies such as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and powerful mobile devices now allow Proximity Alert Systems to be a standalone system that does NOT require any infrastructure, connectivity or site installation. Each device/sensor operates as a stand-alone alert system.  This provides significant advantages over other solutions as it provides maximum flexibility and the ability to utilize the system in any worksite including diverse and remote locations.

Pervidi- proximity alert solution

The benefits of a stand-alone proximity alert system:

Cost effective and Easy to Use: A stand-alone proximity alert system is easy to use and requires minimal set up or training, hence it is very cost-effective solution. Workers can simply wear a tag on their wrist, or carry in their pocket, or attached the tag to their hard hat and the system will automatically detect when they are in proximity to a moving machinery or approaching a hazardous area, or a NO GO ZONE.

Configuration: Pervidi can be programmed to issue different types of alerts depending on the proximity of the worker to the hazard or the forklift. For example: have multi-level alerts -Visual and Audio can be issued when a worker is within a certain distance of a forklift, and a different alert can be issued when the worker is in close proximity to the machine. Making it a very flexible solution for different circumstances.

In conclusion:

The Pervidi Proximity Alert System showcases a robust approach. Pervidi’s ability to operate as a standalone solution, leveraging technologies like Bluetooth Low Energy and mobile devices, marks a significant advancement. This independence from infrastructure and site installation grants a cost-effective flexibility in deployment.

Forklift safety issues around lack of maintenance and absence of pre-start checks:

Poorly maintained forklifts and the absence of pre-start/operation checks can have serious repercussions on both safety and productivity within a workplace. Forklifts are complex machines that undergo significant wear and tear in their day-to-day operations. Neglecting proper maintenance not only jeopardizes the safety of operators and workers but also leads to increased downtime, repair costs, and potential damage to goods and infrastructure. Let's explore the consequences of inadequate maintenance and the importance of regular checks in ensuring optimal forklift performance.

1.     Safety Concerns:

Forklift accidents can result in severe injuries or even fatalities. Poor maintenance can lead to mechanical failures or malfunctions, including brake failures, steering issues, or hydraulic system problems, which significantly increase the risk of accidents.

2.     Downtime and Productivity Loss:

Unplanned downtime due to forklift breakdowns can disrupt operations, leading to costly delays in material handling processes. This can affect supply chain efficiency, production timelines, and overall business productivity.

3.     Increased Maintenance Costs:

Ignoring planned and periodic maintenance often results in minor issues escalating into major problems that require more extensive and expensive repairs. Replacing critical components or entire forklifts due to neglect can strain a company's budget. By adhering to a strict maintenance schedule, businesses can extend the lifespan of their forklifts and reduce the likelihood of costly breakdowns.

4.     Damage to Goods and Infrastructure:

Mechanical failures on forklifts can cause accidents that result in damage to goods, racking systems, and other infrastructure. Dropped or mishandled loads due to faulty equipment can lead to inventory losses and necessitate expensive repairs or replacements of damaged warehouse structures. Regular maintenance and inspection help prevent such incidents and preserve the integrity of both goods and storage systems.

5.     Compliance and Legal Consequences:

Failure to maintain forklifts in accordance with safety regulations and industry standards can expose businesses to legal liabilities and penalties. Regulatory authorities often impose strict guidelines regarding forklift maintenance, operator training, and safety protocols. Non-compliance can lead to fines, work stoppages, and a tarnished reputation for the company.

The importance of proper forklift maintenance and regular pre-start/operation checks cannot be overstated. By investing in routine maintenance, businesses can prevent accidents, minimize downtime, and ultimately achieve a safer and more prosperous work environment.

Digital pre start inspections
