John Landis Grove, 82, co-founder of Grove Manufacturing Co and JLG Industries Inc, died at his home on June 16 after a long illness.

Mr Grove and his brother, Dwight, founded Grove in 1946. He served as executive vice-president and general manager until 1968. During that time he developed the modern hydraulic crane.

In 1969 Mr Grove, a World War II veteran, co-founded JLG and served as president, chief executive and chairman. In 1993, he was inducted into the Construction Equipment Hall of Fame for contributions to the global construction equipment industry.

JLG chairman, president and chief executive Bill Lasky said the company was "saddened" to hear of its founder's passing.

"He left his mark on the world with innovative products that continue to have a lasting effect on the safety and productivity of workers. He was responsible for creating the aerial work platform that could be driven from the basket," Mr Lasky said.

"His accomplishments have had a tremendous impact. Our company name bears John's initials and I know he was proud of the company.

"We remain committed to the highest business and ethical principles on which JLG was founded."
