Forklift, tow truck involved in propane leak
Rome, GA, United StatesAccidental damage to a valve on a large propane tank being moved with a forklift and a tow truck caused an incident in Rome.
The broken valve led to a leak of the potentially volatile material, requiring the evacuation of more than 200 nearby residents for several hours and highly restricted access to the site, largely because of the spread of the three-carbon alkane's gaseous vapours.
Hundreds of gallons of propane seeped from the 1,000 gallon (3,800 litre) tank on the premises of J&J Safety Products, which markets bullet-resistant equipment, largely for the law enforcement community. The tank was being relocated closer to the building.
Police arrested Roger Barton and Robert White on a charge of reckless conduct. Each posted a USD1,350 bond and was released from jail.
