Steel Buildings Company (SBC) is the leading manufacturer of structural steel buildings in the northern Middle East, based in Amman, Jordan. It supplies a wide spectrum of products including Pre- Engineered, Multi-storey and Prefabricated buildings to its home and neighbouring countries, and is the first company in Jordan to take delivery of a
Combilift 4-way forklift. Since the truck has been in operation, SBC has been able to make substantial savings on time, space and money in its materials handling operations according to General Manager Mr. Vatche Karmandarian.
"In our industry we regularly deal with loads of 3 or 4 tonnes which can be up to 13m long, which were problematic to transport using our old counterbalance forklift," says Mr. Vatche, "When I saw a Combilift at the Steelfab exhibition in Dubai I realised immediately that the truck's multi-directional capability was exactly what we needed to improve the handling of both raw materials and finished products."
Manouevering hot rolled sections from the delivery yard into the factory for example used to be a complicated process which involved cranes, trolleys and up to six personnel. The
5 tonne capacity Combilift cuts out manual handling and completes this task in a fraction of the time. Its manoeuvrability also enables it to transport materials to the machine lines during the manufacturing process.
The company is also benefiting from much better use of space both in the storage and production areas as Mr. Vatche explains: "As it is now so easy to move materials around with the Combilift we can use outside storage facilities for finished goods and any delays in our customers' projects no longer impact on our own production schedules. Previously, backlogs caused severe disruption as we had to use a combination of machines to move material around - the simplicity of the Combilift system gives us independence and saves us a lot of time and money."
SBC chose a
C5000L diesel powered Combilift model as the most suitable for its operations, which has a larger than standard cab, and added a fork spreader attachment to give extra stability to the longest loads. The
Combilift range is robustly designed for heavy workloads, enabling the truck to cope easily with the high volume it moves around the 32,000 sq. m site. Sideways travel with loads resting on the platform is a much safer alternative to risky high level transportation with other less manoeuvrable trucks. "The advantages of the Combilift are obvious!" sums up Mr. Vatche, "and we have also finally solved the problem of getting 13m loads through a 9m doorway."
Combilift 4-way forklifts are all designed and built in Monaghan, Ireland, where the company also has its HQ and R&D facility. The current Combilift range now encompasses at least fifteen base models with capacities ranging from 2.5 - 25 tonnes, with LPG, diesel or AC electric power available. Combilift has won numerous awards for its products since the company was established in 1998, and there are now around 11,000 units in operation around the world.
