Two new reachstackers at Chilean port

Two Konecranes SMV 4632 TC5 reachstackers have started operation at the Ultraport copper export terminal in Chile’s Puerto Angamos terminal in Mejillones, owned by Ultraport Angamos.

Konecranes says Ultraport has been a customer for more than a decade with a fleet which includes more than 30 reachstackers and several mobile harbour cranes and were the first to bring Konecranes rail-mounted gantry cranes to South America at its Terminal Graneles del Norte, also in Mejillones.

The new reachstackers in use are fitted with Konecranes’ Flow Drive system which it says “uses a special transmission to cut fuel consumption without losing performance” and helps customers reduce emissions.

Ultraport Angamos manager Nelson Ojeda says the Flow Drive system was an important factor in the decision to use Konecranes.

“As one of the leading port operators in Chile, we have a responsibility to maintain sustainable business in the region,” Nelson continues. “Because Puerto Angamos plays such a key role in the Chilean economy, we believe it is the ideal location to start our emissions reduction program.”

Konecranes sale manager Andres Ramirez adds: “The first Konecranes Flow Drive reach stackers in Latin America are a natural addition to Ultraport’s large Konecranes fleet”.

Konecranes also reports it has received an order for eight CXT overhead cranes with runways featuring nearly 200 m long from Indonesia’s PT Beta Wire for its manufacturing facility in Subang with delivery and installation scheduled for March 2025.
