The Port of Haiphong in northern Vietnam has ordered 30 cargo handling cranes from Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding for a new container terminal.

The order from Port of Haiphong Joint Stock Company, a subsidiary of Vietnam Maritime Corporation, is for six ship-to-shore Mitsui-Paceco Portainer gantry cranes and 24 Mitsui-Paceco Transtainer electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes.

Mitsui president Takahashi Takeyuki says the order is one of the largest for the Port of Haiphong and Mitsui.

The Portainer cranes have a 65 m outreach and are capable of handling large container vessels. These cranes will be one of the largest cranes in the Haiphong area.

Mitsui delivered cranes to the port in 2001 and 2007 as part of the Japanese government’s official development assistance (ODA) program. 

The Port of Haiphong dates back to 1874 when the French colonial rulers of Vietnam transformed the boat docks of Cam village into a large military and commercial port.

In 2022 the port received more than 2,000 ships and 40 million T of cargo. 

The port is currently constructing a new container terminal in the Lach Huyen area of Haiphong.
