When The Times newspaper decided to run a story on the "exponential rise of internet shopping and the resulting boom in the sales of forklift trucks to manage the warehouses that work 24 hours a day to fulfil online orders" they turned to industry leading figure and Bendi Managing Director, Simon Brown for his comments.

Britain is turning into one big warehouse. But that is how Simon Brown, who runs the Translift Bendi forklift manufacturer based in the West Midlands, likes it.

"Sales space is at a premium and retailers have to maximise storage," said Mr Brown. "With all these narrow aisles, whether it's B&Q or Asda, that's where we come in."

Mr Brown's father, Freddy, was a pioneer in the design of an articulated forklift truck able to work in the narrowest of spaces, thus enabling warehouseman to constrict their aisles. He developed and built products under licence with, and for, Toyota and Jungheinrich, two of the industries big companies.

The company, which employs more than 100 people in Redditch, remains independent, and is majority-owned by Simon Brown. It claims that its forklifts, which retail at about £30,000, have reshaped the way storerooms can be configured.

"We had a bit of a dip at the start of the downturn but demand for us has been good all the way through," Mr Brown said.
