UMW Holdings Bhd and Komatsu Ltd are in discussion to supply heavy equipment to new overseas markets.

The Business Times reports that currently half of the revenue and profit for UMW's heavy equipment division comes from overseas. CEO Datuk Syed Hisham Syed Wazir says UMW, which holds the Komatsu franchise in Malaysia, Singapore, Papua New Guinea and Myanmar, wants that figure to increase.

UMW offers equipment like excavators and fire engines, forklifts, and marine and power equipment.

"The equipment business is doing very well under the Komatsu brand. Together with Komatsu, we will look for new markets overseas," Syed Hisham told Business Times. "Our forklift rental business is one of the biggest in the industry with over 2,000 units available to clients, mostly from larger multi-national companies like Panasonic, Toyota and Perodua."

In fiscal 2011, UMW posted a pre-tax profit of RM1.38 billion (USD442 million) on the back of RM13.56 billion (USD4.3 billion) in revenue. The heavy equipment division contributed a revenue of RM2.08 billion (USD666 million).
