Bring Logistics, a leading third party logistics provider in the Nordic region, uses Rocla's automation solution in their warehouse in Berger, near Oslo. The 32 000 square meter, highly automated Skedsmo Logistic Center opened in the spring of 2010. Rocla's seven very narrow aisle (VNA) automated guided vehicles (AGV) handle the pallets in the very narrow aisle racking area. Automating this kind of process in the warehouse increases the safety and reduces the operating costs.The racking area where the vehicles operate contains a total of 81,200 pallet places up to a height of 10.65 meters. The automated trucks pick up and leave their loads at a conveyor when transporting pallets in and out from the racking area. Transport capacity is 173 pallets an hour with a maximum lifting capacity of 1000 kg per pallet.
"We operate five days a week in two shifts. Automating pallet handling was a more cost efficient solution than using a manual solution", explains Mr. Geir Nielsen, Logistic Director of Bring Logistics. "We chose Rocla because Rocla was able to offer a proven technology concept to fit our demands regarding safety and function", he adds.
Using
Rocla AGVs in VNA warehouses minimizes the risk of incorrect load handling. AGVs handle the loads always the same way and the risk for pallet falling is very small. Automation also reduces the need for personnel working in the same area which also limits the risk of a serious incident. The temperature in Bring Logistics racking area is lower and there is less light than in a traditional warehouse with human operated VNA trucks, all of which reduces energy consumption.
Rocla's automated guided vehicles use multi-navigation in Bring Logistics warehouse: laser navigation in the master aisle and inductive wire navigation in the narrow aisles. AGVs are equipped with triplex masts and sideways telescopic forks used in Rocla's manual narrow aisle truck. Thanks to Rocla's modular design and use of standard components the delivery time is shorter than in traditional automation projects. Payback time for this kind of investment in three shift operation is less than two years.
