Equipment Safety Systems of Seaford, Victoria has launched a new safety system for telehandlers, the Gen 3, which exceeds the requirements of the Australian Standard AS 1418-19 and AS 1418-5.
Managing director Ted Parrott tells
Forkliftaction.com News that the new system is a third-generation model, replacing the previous TSS6245 model, which also incorporated automatic tool recognition.
"The Gen 3 model ... includes a daylight colour graphics display with an on-screen interactive rating chart with a zoom feature to closer inspect your loading parameters when close to maximum ratings."
The most unique feature of the new model is its Dynamic Stability Triangle (DST).
"To ensure stability of the telehandler, the operator simply keeps the dot, which represents the centre of gravity, within the triangle. If the centre of gravity moves closer to the sides of the triangle, a warning is given to the operator to alert him to imminent danger."
He adds that the system includes both a reversing camera and a 'blind side' camera to protect the front right-hand side of the telehandler - both activated when the machine is placed in gear.
"When the cameras are in operation, the load data is still displayed and if 90% of rating is reached, the camera is automatically switched off and the rating chart displayed."
He adds that if an accident should occur involving a telehandler, there will be many questions to be answered, particularly about the overload protection and the safety it provided the operator.
"When automatic tool recognition is fitted, the system protects the operator by not allowing him to operate outside the safe work parameters; it protects the telehandler from overload, and it minimises maintenance and plant failure.
"Most importantly, in the case of an incident occurring, the owner has taken the position of creating the safest possible work environment for the operator, minimising the chance of an injury and possible litigation."
He says the company has a high level of orders for the new system from telehandler suppliers such as Haulotte, JCB and Manitou.
