Forklift licensing, warehouse management and safe practices will be on the agenda at free seminars and workshops to be held at Sydney Materials Handling on 25-27 October.

They will be part of an action packed triple-header trade show that also includes The Safety Show Sydney and Bulkex, co-located at Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park.

The Australian Warehousing Association, established last year, will present the forklift seminars.

The National Forklift Championship will add a touch of excitement with skills competitions for 'Best Male' and 'Best Female' on the show floor.

In the first seminar on Tuesday, 25 October, Steve Hughes, from AIMM Industrial Training, will present on the current and new forklift licensing system to be implemented from 1 January as part of the national Work Health Safety harmonisation program.

Forklift operation is now deemed 'high risk' and a more complex licence test is to be part of the new system.

The issue about whether to rent or buy will be thoroughly canvassed by Paul Bennett of Adaptalift Hyster. He will discuss cash flow, flexibility, budgeting, upgrading of equipment and the advantages of off balance sheet financing.

David Greenfield of Pulse Logistics Systems will present on the benefits of using an advanced warehouse management system.

Pulse is a leader in the design, development and implementation of advanced Supply Chain Management, Warehouse Management Systems, Web Portals and Automatic Data Capture.

On the second day, Wednesday 26 October Graham Eastick from Display & Storage will discuss storage systems and which is the best to use.

He will be followed by Peter Blayney of Bluetron Pty Ltd, who will speak about Verification of Competency as a tool for meeting duty of care obligations.

There is a national standards-based requirement for employers engaging individuals to perform high-risk work that they provide additional training, instruction and information on the equipment operation, hazards, risks and control measures relevant to their workplace.

Mr Blayney's talk will take into account the premise that duty of care obligations extend further than the performance of high-risk work.

Finally, Peter Hunt of Whamcorp will present on 'Warehousing distribution and dangerous goods - What do you need to know?'

His premise is that an organisation that stores or handles any dangerous goods has responsibilities, and if it also despatches dangerous goods, it has even more responsibilities.

He will discuss the Australian Dangerous Goods law, compliance with storage requirements and distribution responsibilities.

There will be a number of other free seminars and workshops.

Safe Work Australia, which is developing model Work Health Safety Regulations, model Codes of Practice and a national compliance and enforcement policy to support the WHS Act, will hold seminars on the status of work health and safety harmonisation across the States.

WorkCover NSW will hold workshops on occupational health and safety, workers compensation and injury management.

The seminar and workshop program has been drawn up over the three days to give visitors an opportunity to attend as many presentations as possible.

Although the seminars are free, bookings will be essential.
