The first eight out of a total of 16 Terex diesel-electric straddle carriers have been delivered to terminal operator DP World in Melbourne.

The remaining units will be delivered later this year, bringing DP World Melbourne's fleet to 22 straddle carriers.

The new-generation straddle carriers are highly versatile, due to their operational flexibility and ability to both transfer and lift containers at high speed.

Andrew Jena, general manager, DP World, says fuel consumption data from an analysis of six of these machines indicates an 11% saving per hour compared to earlier diesel-hydraulic carriers. "The dual benefits of increased productivity and energy efficiency will have a significant positive impact on our container handling operations as well as the environment at the Port of Melbourne."
