Brazil’s first electric reach stackers will be installed at APM Terminals Suape, which will be the first 100% electric terminal in Latin America.
The two reach stackers are among the 28 all-electric pieces of Sany container handling equipment purchased by the terminal.
The new terminal, in the Governador Eraldo Gueiros Port Industrial Complex (Suape), Pernambuco, has been under construction since February and is expected to start operations in the second half of 2026.
"APM Terminals Suape is investing more than USD47million in modern equipment to consolidate our project in Pernambuco, which will be the first 100% electric terminal in Latin America,” says Aristides Russi Júnior, managing director of APM Terminals Suape.
“This is yet another step that reinforces APM Terminals' commitment to leading the modernisation of the port sector in Brazil,"
The equipment purchases, initially announced in June, have now been concluded.
The order includes two remote-controlled ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, seven remote-controlled rubber tyred gantry (RTG) cranes, two electric empty container forklifts, one 16 T forklift and 14 terminal tractors.
APM Terminals says in addition to generating direct and indirect jobs, the new terminal will foster socio-economic development in the region and offer greater connectivity and expanded berthing windows for shipping companies.
APM Terminals Suape will also have its own 5G network, which will make it possible to securely transmit information in real time to customers anywhere in the world.
The equipment order is part of APM Terminals’ commitment to being net zero by 2040.
