Zhejiang Maximal Forklift Co Ltd (Maximal) has partnered with UK explosion-proof specialist Pyroban Group to introduce a range of explosion-proof forklifts.

Maximal, which started producing forklifts in 2005, says it approached Pyroban as it deemed it the world leader in explosion protection. Pyroban has been explosion-proofing forklifts for nearly 40 years and supporting suppliers and users of explosion-proof forklifts for over 25 years.

Maximal's Max-Ex explosion-proof forklifts use Pyroban technology to convert its 2-3 tonne forklifts. The Max-Ex series FB 20M-FB 30M counterbalance forklifts with 48V battery feature Zapi electric controllers, AC maintenance-free traction and lift pump motors.

When Maximal and Pyroban engineers collaborated on the forklifts, they focused on retaining the original ergonomics of the forklifts primarily by integrating the two main explosion-proof enclosures within the original forklift chassis. The forklifts' wide visibility through its mast, compact turning radius and regenerative braking system were unaffected by the conversion.

The forklifts are particularly suited for the petro-chemical, chemical and paint/coatings industries. All forklifts are supplied with stainless steel-clad forks, electrically conductive tyres and an anti-static driver seat.

The forklifts can be built to international standards of explosion protection.

Maximal says it will introduce more explosion-proof forklift models next year, including warehouse trucks and trucks for the oil and gas industries.

A Max-EX FB 25M 2.5 tonne electric forklift is on display at CeMAT Asia held at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre this week.

Separately, Pyroban will officially launch a new generation of zone 2 explosion-proof forklift conversions at IMHX 2010 at NEC, Birmingham. System 6000, the new solution for zone 2-classified hazardous areas is suitable for all types of diesel and electric mobile equipment. It incorporates intelligent gas detection to continuously monitor the environment around the protected equipment.

Pyroban's Malcolm Davis says the new system "supersedes" the company's award-winning System 5000 with new software, new hardware and infrared and gas-sensing options.

"Forklift technology has become increasingly complex with a focus on energy consumption and ergonomics. System 6000 complements the latest technologies seen in engine and battery electric truck design, particularly VNA, pallet, picking and reach truck designs," Davis adds.
