This week's story about a fight over grey imports of heavy equipment may seem out of place in a forklift newsletter. However, forklift dealers in the United States will no doubt be watching closely because a potential source of quality used stock may be at risk. There are fears that if the International Trade Commission upholds Caterpillar's case and prevents dealers from selling imported Caterpillar excavators, the giant may be tempted to have all its products covered. Such a ruling will also be a green light for other manufacturers who would be keen to shut the door on cheap imports. As high-value items subject to differential international pricing, forklifts could well be next on the list. So, it's not just about earthmovers!
