Dr Will Murray of Interactive Driving Systems reinforced the HSE's message on workplace transport risk at FLTA Safety Conference 2006.
The Fork Lift Truck Association (FLTA) has welcomed the UK Health & Safety Executive's (HSE) route map for workplace transport risk management as a major contributor to improving safety.

The FLTA said in a release that HSE statistics showed forklifts accounted for 24 per cent of workplace vehicle-related accidents. Three million employees work with or near vehicles as part of their jobs.

In 2004/05, 5,427 workplace transport injuries were reported to the HSE. They included 68 fatalities.

The HSE said its route map would help employers understand existing workplace safety rules and guidance and help them manage risks.

"The route map aims to provide standards or benchmarks in site layout and design, vehicle selection and maintenance, competence, fitness to drive, visiting and agency drivers, management and risk assessment, and communication," the release said.
