South Korea’s HJ Shipbuilding and Construction (HJSC) will manufacture and install 34 transfer cranes at Busan New Port.
HJSC says its construction division won the contract for the port’s West Container Terminal phase 2 to 6 transfer crane installation project commissioned by the Busan Port Authority.
The company was also involved in phase 2 to 5 of Busan New Port Pier Seven, South Korea's first fully automated terminal which opened in April.
In that project, HJSC oversaw the construction work and the installation of 34 transfer cranes.
The latest project is expected to take 36 months to complete for a total construction cost of KRW187 billion (USD135 million).
Transfer cranes are designed to stack containers in yards or load and unload them onto automated guided vehicles (AGVs) or trailers.
Korean-made port cranes enjoyed global prominence until the early 2000s but domestic production ceased in 2006 in the face of increased competition from Chinese crane makers.
With phase 2 to 5, the Busan Port Authority opted for Korean-manufactured cranes to stimulate domestic industries, secure automation technologies and prevent information leakage abroad—critical concerns in the global port industry.
