Terex Corp reports progress for its lifting equipment while experiencing mixed results in other segments.

"We are encouraged by the performance of our aerial work platform (AWP) business," says Ronald DeFeo, Terex chairman and chief executive officer. The business "continues to reflect the strong end-market dynamics of the rental channel, particularly in North America".

Sales in the AWP segment increased to USD509.1 million for the quarter ended 31 March from the comparable 2012 quarter's USD419.8 million. Gross profit for the segment jumped 23%, and the income from operations climbed 14.2%.

AWP backlog as of 31 March increased 10.3% to USD577.3 million from the comparable 2012 date.

For the corporation's continuing operations, Westport-based Terex reports profit of USD20.5 million on sales of USD1.72 billion for the quarter versus profit of USD20.5 million on sales of USD1.82 billion for the comparable 2012 period. In the recent quarter, Terex absorbed a charge relating to the divestiture of certain road-building assets and a charge involving the material handling and port solutions business.

Within the AWP segment, Terex introduced the Genie-brand GTH-2506 and GTH-4014 rigid-frame telehandlers and the rotating GTH-5021-R at Messe München GmbH's bauma trade fair from 11-17 April in Munich, Germany.
Each machine meets European stage IIIB engine emissions laws and comes with upgrades that can enhance productivity and capability.

In particular, the 2.5 T capacity, 6 m (19.8 ft.) lift height GTH-2506 has a Deutz engine with 55 kW of power, a 10% increase over the previous model. Terex plans to start production of the GTH-2506 later this year.
