Cargo volume handled by Dubai airports expected to grow 48% by 2015

$80 billion investment in airport infrastructure across the GCC set to drive exponential growth in trade

The GCC region has traditionally played a pivotal part in the lucrative trade between the West and the East. The importance of the Middle East as a trade and logistical hub continues today with continued growth in the transport and shipment of oil, gas and other vital goods to and from the region.

The economic impetus given to the region by the free flow of goods and services, while already considerable, is set to increase with huge investments in transport and cargo handling infrastructure nearing completion across the GCC.

The UAE is at the forefront of this development with the recent unveiling of a comprehensive expansion of its air transport facilities. According to figures released by Dubai Airports, the amount of cargo handled by the Dubai World Central and Dubai International Airport is set to balloon by 48 per cent by the year 2015. Cargo tonnage handled by the two terminals will amount to an estimated 3 million tonnes by 2015 as compared to the 1.9 million tonnes handled in 2009.*

According to recent reports the region has seen investment to the tune of US$90 billion in the setting up, refurbishment and expansion of airport infrastructure. Every country in the region is in the process of expanding its air, road and sea transport and cargo handling facilities, as demand grows for goods and services from across the world.**

"The continuing growth in cargo handling facilities and infrastructure throughout the region will positively impact the economies of the wider Middle East," said Ahmed Pauwels, CEO of Epoc Messe Frankfurt, organiser of Materials Handling Middle East 2011, the trade show for the materials handling, cargo, logistics, supply chain and freight industry in the Middle East.

"Trade has fashioned the development of societies in this part of the world and is set to continue to drive their ongoing progress riding on the back of excellent transport and freight infrastructure. Materials Handling Middle East will lay international focus onto this strategic region that plays a vital role in international trade and logistics," Pauwels added.

Materials Handling Middle East 2011, which will be held at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre from September 25th to 27th, is expected to attract keen interest from international and regional companies looking to strengthen their presence in the Middle East.

Also running alongside the exhibition, for the first time in co-operation with The House of Logistics and Mobility (HOLM) Frankfurt and The Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) is a series of conferences, seminars and workshops which will deliver insights into the latest trends, technologies and innovations the industry has to offer.

Materials Handling Middle East 2011 is co-located with TOC Middle East 2011, the regional edition of the Terminal Operations Conference and Exhibition.
