It is about being close to the client, says Marco de Jager. |
It is not always about buying a new truck. Sometimes a second life lift truck is a good alternative. Marco de Jager, Manager of the European Rental and Used Trucks' Centre at Cat® Lift Trucks, explains why."A used truck will save you costs. Money that you can invest elsewhere in your organization", says Mr. De Jager.
"We look at the total picture and recommend our customers what is the best product mix for their operations. It is about being close to the client, understanding their needs and offering the best option. If our customer needs a backup truck for incidental deployment or urgently needs an additional truck for catching busy periods, the used trucks are a good option", he explains.
"The market of used truck market is growing in Europe and will continue to grow in the future. The emphasis will be set on young used trucks" he continues.
There is naturally also export for used trucks, especially in Europe from one country to another. The demand for young machines is huge while the supply is limited, then a machine from abroad is interesting to buy.
The used truck market is growing. |

Mr. De Jager says, "purchasing and selling a used truck has no difference if it's a big or small company. The procedure is the same. To create a network with traders that could buy used machines. Another way is to put new trucks in rental for 5 years, after the rental period there are interesting used trucks for traders".
The easiest way is a combination, when you ask your dealer to offer a used truck and then the dealer takes care of getting rid of the old one in return.
Marco de Jager has a background of more than 20 years' experience on the used trucks industry as a dealer. Since last year, he has been heading Cat Lift Trucks' Rental and Used Trucks' Center that is supporting Cat
® forklift dealers in dealing with used trucks as well as renting trucks and purchasing and selling second life lift trucks.
Mr. De Jager is very happy with the success of this initiative: "the first months have been interesting for us as we have created a lot of opportunities. However, we have the common problem in this segment of the market: it's difficult to find young used machines for competitive prices."
Cat lift trucks dealers, appreciate the support of the manufacturer in their rental and used truck's business.
According to Mr. De Jager: "Our dealers offers solutions to customers with our used and rental's trucks. For example, when a customer has to deal with a peak in their activity, and the dealer does not have at that moment a suitable truck itself, it is possible to rent it from us. "
Marco de Jager wishes to extend this segment of the materials handling business by creating a Cat lift trucks and warehouse community to support dealers and customers to enhance their second life trucks' business.
