Breakbulk Americas 2017 Exhibitors to Support Hurricane Relief at Upcoming Event Companies exhibiting at Breakbulk Americas 2017, the largest event in the Americas for the project cargo and breakbulk industry, will use this gathering of more than 5,000 professionals to bring relief to the victims of Hurricane Harvey. And they're going about it in some pretty meaningful ways that reflect the worldwide support for the thousands of people devastated by the hurricane and historic flooding.

"While so many of our colleagues and friends are still dealing with the aftermath of this catastrophe, we don't find it appropriate to have our Breakbulk party this year and instead have chosen to help our colleagues in need," Per Petersen, president of Germany-based BBC Chartering said. This year, the heavy-lift carrier will donate its booth furniture-living room set, dining sets and bar stools, admittedly a little"homier than usual." Anyone attending the event can nominate a person within the transportation industry to win the furniture sets.

Similarly, Saudi Arabian logistics provider Bahri has made the decision to shift its sponsorship of the annual charity golf tournament to Harvey relief efforts. Money raised for the tournament and additional donations received on the show floor will be given to the Maritime Workers Emergency Medical Fund, a Texas non-profit established by the late Jerry Nagel, a Breakbulk Lifetime Achievement Award winner. At Stewart World Ports, North America's most northern ice-free port - located in one of the most beautiful settings on the continent at the end of the Portland Canal in Western Canada - is skipping the swag and instead donating $1 to the Red Cross for every business card collected at its booth. Breanne Pappin, who heads the port's
public relations department, has issued a challenge to all Breakbulk Americas exhibitors to do the same.

Thankfully, Hurricane Harvey did no damage to the GRB or to nearby hotels, so the event could proceed as planned. "Hurricane Harvey was an absolute nightmare, but I am thankful to see our Houston community come together and restoration efforts are in full force," Breakbulk Americas event director, Christian Thompson said. "We are beyond grateful that the George R. Brown Convention Center and downtown area did not take on water or sustain any serious damage. Breakbulk Americas will provide the perfect atmosphere to gather all colleagues and recognize how our Breakbulk industry is truly resilient."
