Paper handling specialists met to develop a paper best practices guide. This unique cross-industry collaborative project brought together expertise from across the entire paper supply chain.
Mr. Lars Petersson, Auramo OY President, has participated in this project. Mr. Petersson is the major forest product handling specialist in the Bolzoni Group and has been active in the material handling business for more than 4 decades.

Mr. Petersson, tell us about this project. You have been invited as member participant and contributor. Why did you find it interesting?
I found this plan of great appeal. The project has been developed by 30 organisations and companies all bringing their expertise across the entire paper supply chain from the mill, through transport, storage, and handling, to converting and printing.
I'm proud I've been contacted as Bolzoni Auramo paper handling specialist, to give my support. I found this team effort exciting.

What does OPHAL stand for?
"Optimised Paper Handling & Logistics". The guide explains how to identify the possible risks of damage along the paper transport chain and how to minimise them.
With about 10-15 handling stages before arriving at the printing house, paper rolls are subject to several damage risks, such as incorrect handling, paper roll out-of-roundness, loose wrapping and shocks. To focus on the possible dangers means to prevent rolls to get damaged, avoiding machine downtime and productivity loos.
The choice of the correct paper roll clamp is the first step forward to a good handling practice.

Which is the aim of the guide, and why is it for free?
The 270-pages guide aims to give a better practical understanding of the supply chain. The following stage is to optimise it, reducing accidents, improving economic and environmental performance and optimising working practices at transporters, converters and at printers. This publication is for free, because the project's publishing members believe that cost should not be a barrier to making best practices widely available. And I completely agree.
