Discussion:
transmission problems

My lift goes into gear sometimes and sometimes not. When it engages it pulls fine with no slippage. When it doesn't engage, shifting from forward to reverse a few times and/or revving the engine will eventually get it to engage. Any ideas as to the problem?
Thanks

I am pleased to say that the lift needed no hydraulic fluid but was 4 quarts low on transmission fluid. Now it shifts great and pulls fine. I just hope I don't wake up tomorrow and find the four quarts of transmission fluid all over my garage floor. Now if I can get the battery to hold a charge I'll be good to go
Thanks everyone or your help, GOD bless you all!

Now, where do I add the fluid?? Do I need to take the floor board out?
Thanks

I found the dip stick for the transmission and sure enough it is very low on fluid. I will get some tomorrow an fill it. Hopefully that will do it.
Thanks to both of you for your help. Think I'm gonna check the inching valve and the cable while I'm at it.
Thanks again

Check inching cable isn't sticking either. It's connected to the left brake pedal.

Thank you. That's kinda what I thought but wanted to get a confirmation to my suspicions before I start. I'm disabled so even this simple chore requires planning.
Thanks again,
Johnnycee

try servicing the transmission
check the fluid, if its dark then it probably does need servicing.

when you do so remove the sump screen and clean it out
check it for the amount of debris in the screen while your at it.
a partially clogged sump screen or low fluid level will cause this problem.

if you do not find any problems there then remove the shifting solenoid from the top of the transmission and clean it, it may be sticking. If cleaning it improves the operation then order a new valve, generally even cleaning them will not fix it due to the internal comtamination, i've never been able to clean one good enough for it to last very long afterwards so i always wound up replacing it in the end.

you may have to do both cleaning the sump screen and the valve, it all depends on how dirty the fluid is.
