Discussion:
Emigrating to New Zealand

Hi, i am an RTITB registered/accredited lift truck instructor,have been for 12 years. I am moving to the Christchurch area of New Zealand soon due to my partners work. I was wondering if anyone out there could let me know if my qualifications and experience would allow me to work as a lift truck instructor either employed or self employed in New Zealand or would i need to retrain. Or would i be better off looking for a different type of work entirely? Please advise.

Your RTITB registration and accreditation is a plus but is not recognized by New Zealand as it has its own Codes of Approved Practice.

With your background and experience you should be able to easily adapt to the New Zealand training and assessment requirements.

Approved Code of Practice for Training Operators and Instructors of Powered Industrial Lift Trucks (Forklifts)

# Fork-Lift Truck Operators Safety Code

* Part 1: Front Loading Forklift Trucks
* Part 2: Order Pickers
* Part 3: Side Loaders
* Part 4: Straddle Trucks

I would also recommend you click on: Drafts

Click on: Approved Code of Practice for Training Instructors and Operators of Powered Industrial Lift Trucks (Forklifts) Part 1. (This draft has not yet been approved but offers additional information that you should become familiar with.)

You should find good opportunity as an instructor with a large employer, with a recognized training company, or as an independent trainer once you learn and meet the New Zealand requirements.

Contact your nearest New Zealand Department of Labour Health and Safety Office for any questions you may have.
