Disconnect the linkage and try to shift the lever at the control valve by hand. You may have sheared the roll pin that passes through the linkage and the actuator shaft that goes into the control valve. This was very common on those machines, you may even find the whole worn out and loose on the shaft. If you do, simply drill it out and the holes in the link to match the next size up roll pin. I did this repair many times and if you have a long enough drill bit you dont even have to remove the control valve.
The switch you see by the steer column is the nuetral safety switch. If this has failed the lift would not start. Since you have a mechanical linkage for shifting, does everything move when you shift the lever. Make sure the arm on the transmission is still connected. If everything looks fine then I would say something has broken or come loose inside the valve body.

Thanks for the help the model number is GLP050RCJUAE086. It is a mechanical shifter but there is a switch what looks to be a a relal on top of the steering console it is round black with 2 wires coming off of it. There is a series of notches on the steering column that coincided with the shifter. It does beep when put into reverse.

Yhanks again,
sean

We'll need the rest of the model number to really help...

However, I can't think of any glp's that used a relay to activate the direction solenoids...
The buzzing points to an electrical problem. Assuming the transmission is electrically shifted, I'd look at the direction switches and related wiring.

Fact of the week
A 1904 lecture by scientist Elie Metchnikoff extolled the benefits of consuming yoghurt for halting the "intestinal putrefaction" which he believed causes aging. The press reported yoghurt as a cure for aging and the ensuing popularity is still with us today.
