We have had terrible problems with starters for japanese forklift trucks. We have tried SMH, Helmar and most recently changed to Intella Lift Parts. We used to buy rebuilt, then tried new and now buy "Heavy Duty" new ones. They all seem to be the same low quality starters that last about 100 hours. They even sound like they are determined to fail when first installed.
We were told that R & R Forklift in Canada had the answer but we checked on a price on a starter for a Mazda F2 and the price was around $375.00.
As you all know even if the starter is warranteed, it's a real killer if you have to drive 2 hours round trip to replace it.
Any recommendations on who sells good quality starters?

yes, local guys can usually match it up. Had a quote on one for $900 oem, got a Bosch for $159 at local re-builder. lasted many years!
Try to find a good quality alternator and starter repair shop in your area. I am lucky to have a good quality repair shop in my area, very reasonable.

For the Mazda FE and F2 engines we offer a genuine Mitsubishi electric starter at Intella. This is the same starter/supplier that Nacco uses.
Please call us for details.

Welcome to China, No Matter the name on the Box!
All the same crap.
For reliability insist on OEM, not will fit.
And hope the OEM's are not using China crap!

R&R does have good heavy duty starters. Lasting as good as OEM Rich
i might be able to help you. had a customer with similar situation. get intouch.
Had this problem as well. After a lot of intelligent head scratching and blame/name calling I mike'd a new one on a new truck, plus measurements and compared to the replacement units. Also did a 'disection' (or 4) Found 2 things:
1. A s**t load of dirt in all of them from it seemed external places, as well as internal failure. the replacement ones had less 'free' space (less case = cheaper maybe?) and thus the dirt seemed to kill them sooner
2. some of the replacement units didn't fit quite right, sizes and clearance off slightly. Back to shims and permatex - that helped some.
Just my two cents worth
never heard that kind of problems, isn t there an engine problem?we bought most of them from tvh europe, but i think they sell worldwide. Never had problem with mitsubishi, nissan, toyota etc. why does the starter fail?contact, brushes, bearing?
