Hi guys, Very deep subject here as Ken has pointed out. First off remember that he issue of a certificate is recognised that the candidate has received "adequate basic training" If a candidate fails the ABF test then extra training is required - meaning that the training was not adequate for that particular trainees needs, for whatever reason. We are supposed to give a report on all our trainees, good or bad - where we make recommendations for further training as required. I personally like to test all candidates and use the failed test to highlight weaknesses which the candidate can see for him/her self, plus then they know exactly whats coming and the standard required. I will never test an unknown candidate and issue a certificate - how can I sign a statement that this person has received adequate basic training when i have no idea what training they have received

Very interesting subject this, In my view we as the instructor/examiner's should be able to say that if a trainee is not upto a standard where we think that they will be safe as a driver then we should be able to decide not to test them and allow extra training before the test. But (always a but) when we are out there training especially for large companies we always have to inform the managment with there progress when they ask, personally if a trainee has not reached the standard i will usually tell them, more often than not they will always say test them anyway and see what happens. 9 times out of 10 they do fail and need more training unfortunatly they have now had a big knock to there confidence sometimes making them worse the second time round.

it,s like learning to drive a car. the instructor won,t send you for a test till they think you have a chance to pass. should be the same for forklifts , very dangerous machine in the wrong hands. i know of a guy who had been driving forklifts for years. company he worked for sent all the operators for retests after a few accidents. one guy tried 3 times and failed. he still driving the sweeper now
