Discussion:
Hyster rads, XM series, a good way to clean them.

Hi, as the weather gets warmer, we are running into issues of over heating. Another tech and I decided to really pursue this can discovered that the rads are getting bunged up with pulp dust (We move a lot of pulp bails). So we removed the counter weight and just started poking out all the fins and sure enough that machine has not over heated since. There was also a HUGE pile of pulp and other junk once we were done.

We have a "team" of guys that come in twice a week to air blast out the pulp dust from the engine bay, rad etc, but either they are not doing their job, or they can't keep up. I keep mulling pressure washing but, the pulp dust is so fine it could end up like paper mache goop and just plug the fins. Thoughts?

Also, we've had a couple machine catch fire and I've concluded that the pulp dust is getting compacted on the crank shaft pulley and (guessing) the machine get so hot that it, in a way heats up the compacted pulp dust on the pulley like a charcoal briquette and it will ignite. How I was finally able to figure this out, is a machine caught fire, but instead of using a fire extinguisher, I took the machine and drowned the back end with water, fire went out, but there was a papery smell. I scraped out the pulley well and sure enough there was little embers still glowing.

Thanks!

you can get a lint screen for the radiator in such but no matter what you do a daily blow out with an airline keeps them clear. do you have holes cut in the hood sides ?? counter acts the vacuum effect that the truck has whilst travelling about in the dust. only wash if you have the rad out so to fully check for pulping/blocking but you know that already mate..
