Discussion:
Truck-mounted forklifts

Would like to attach collapsible/fold out cage to rear of forklift to allow unloader/helper to ride along while operator moves cargo from truck to work-site. Assume cage meets same safety standards as those used to lift maintenance workers on forks/front of forklift. Does anyone have experience with something like this? Any comments re: OSHA or other safety regs that might prohibit? Comment in forum or email me at budcoh at columbus dot rr dot com.

An OHG must be tested by the manufacturer to the point of failure to satisfy OSHA/ANSI requirements and then you can build a copy of the original. This proceedure is very expensive and explains why the price of these items is so high. If you design and install it you are liabe for any safety defects in the product. I would agree that the idea sounds like a time saver but the reality is very dangerous. If you can't park closer or disability of the worker is a problem maybe you should check in to a small personell cart that you could load and unload with your truck mounted lift.

I am not a lawyer or an employee of a government agency but I have been in the business long enough to see good intentions turn in to disaster.

You may want to think about this idea, Forklift caged platforms barely squeek by OSHA to start with and to attach to the rear of the truck which swings back and forth when you steer and have people in the cage while it is motion sounds like a recipe for disaster. Im not an expert in all the OSHA regulations but I would bet this rig won't fly with them. I would rather my helpers wear out their shoes and be tired then be responsible for their deaths--no malice toward you intended. Regards--roadrat
