Allis Chalmers FPL40-24-2PS "Cotton"? Forklift

Recently I bought early '70s? vintage AC FPL40-24-2PS pneumatic tire forklift with Buda, 4B-153, OHV, 4 cyl. propane engine & Borg Warner T11 two speed auto. trans. (rigid machine!)
I bought a engine/trans. parts manual on ebay - In looking through the manual I noticed various part #'s as being for a "Cotton Unit". I was hoping one of you really checked out A/C guys might know what that was? I noticed the front engine crankshaft pulley was a 2 belt for the "Cotton Unit" as opposed to a 1 belt as mine is - but then some of these had an "Oil Clutch" paired with a manual trans. so ???
Thanks for any info.

The FTP60-24 is a basic 6000 lb.@24" load center rated lift truck with a 2 stage mast. If this model number is complete the unit is a gasoline engine powered (A-C G230 6 cylinder) with two speed "oil clutch" transmission that A-C built. The actual lift capacity rating would depend on the mast type (2 or 3 stage), mast lifting height & any front end attachments like a side shifter, fork positioner, etc. The serial number is stamped into the frame and on the truck data plate. This is an "older" model. My guess 1960's era and probably built at the Harvey, Illinois plant. But the s/n would be needed to determine that. There are serial number guides & maybe some "old timers' on these board might have more insight, than I - worked for AC from '67 t o' 81. Trashed all my lfit truck files 7 info two days after I retired in 2007.
Allis Chalmers went out of business in mid 80's - service parts & tech info are hard to find.

Take it to a scrap yard they might give you that much for it - drain fluids first.

Forklift help
If you do go the electric fuel pump route- make sure to T into the pressure line to the carb, install a variable restrictor in that line & run that line back to the tank.

I've found the either A)- the electric pump will over power the float in the carb over time (forklifts don't usually run high rpm's & the pressure backs up) or B)- the backed up pressure will destroy the pump over time.

Installing the by-pass back to the tank eliminates this issue

Customers love technology- until they have to pay to fix it!
you can try putting an electric fuel pump in, (you are running gasoline, correct?), as for plugs, those older engines could run on any plug of the same type. I think those plugs were short reach w/ a 13/16 head if memory serves me proper.

The engine would be an Allis-Chalmers G-153, 4 cylinder, OHV. Can't help w/the spark plug type. Allis Chalmers disappeared from the market place in mid 1980's so parts are a bit hard to find for a 35 year old unit. But if you contact Komatsu Forklift at (708) 385-0330 (Chicago area) and ask for Scott Eller (General Manger with service/parts background) he might be able to help you or email [email address removed]. Scott goes back to the days of Allis-Chalmers and has a bit of gray hair like me. Make certain you have the serial number - should be on the trucks name plate & stamped in the frame - can't recall where to find it. Spent my first 14 years in the lift truck business w/ A-C before having the opportunity in 1981 to seek new horizons. That is when I first met Scott - use my name if you want John Johnson. Hope this helps.

I grew up where you traveled South to get to
Canada & saw the famous Canadian, Gordie Howe, play at the Olympia when I was starting to shave once a month whether I needed to or not.. Enjoy Canada especially the Elora Gorge area in the fall & Labatt Blue.

I don' go back to the Buda days - Allis Chalmers bought them in 1952/54 for the engines and lift trucks were built in small quantities in a "back building" adn wer initially part of teh A-C engine division. I joined them in late 1967 At that time everything was badged Allis-Chalmer a the Buda engine was labled G153.

I can direct you to two people that "might" help you as they were long time AC dealers or had roots that went back to the "olden" days. Langer Material Handling, Valencia, Pa Kevin Langer a contact but his dad Bill would probably be the best person (he is retired but still looks over the kids shoulder). The other is Komatsu Lift Truck in Illinois, Bedford Park (Chicago area) I think - contact Scott Eller - he started in the Parts Department with the Allis-Chalmers factory store. You can find their contact info via Google search. The Buda history & A-C history has died the death of a ragged doll.

You can use my name to open the door a little -these contact a the "newer" kids on the block - I'm a young almost 71 - it will be official on that Boxing Day holiday in Canada.

Well some days you are a diamond some days just a chunk of coal - I got lucky - thanks for you comment. But I did spent my 1st 14 years out of college with the lift truck division of A-C & I only have a touch of Alzeimers "Light" right now - my wife might want to argue that point but she isn't around right now to see me type this. See she will give a list of 10 things to buy at the store & garuanteed I will bring back 9 - I speed shop - in and out and repeat if necessary ( I woulg expand the rest of that thought but the FAC Admin might censor me).
