Discussion:
BT LSR 1200/2 Brake fault

I have a customer that is getting intermittent fault with the brake not dis-engaging. It has an electric brake similar to Lenze style. The probelm is not with the electrics of the brake but the brake friction plate (rotor) runs directly on the top of a cast housing. If the truck is left for a any period of time for example a long weekend the bottom of the brake friction plate sticks to the cast housing. The brake disk can easily freed by knocking it round using a hammer and a punch but using the traction doesn't free the brake. I have seen on most Lenze brake there is a seperate thin piece of steel between the motor housing and the brake friction plate, i believe this would fix my problem but there isn't one available for this style brake.

Has anyone had this problem? and has anyone got a simple soloution?

The LSR / LT brake is adjustable, it should be a 2 stage coil, one half of the clamp plate should activate before the 2nd half.

Had a look today while my LSR was naked & the friction brake disc does just clamp down on to the top of the metal motor casting.

I've only ever replaced 1 brake coil of this type of brake & that was on a LT many years ago.

Yes from TVH but I had the fault with the original brake assembly.

Forkingabout, when I say lubricated it was just with abit of light oil.

I get this promblem on power pallet truck brakes down at the docks. I have to knock the brake with a hammer and unstick it and will work fine for months. Have tried new brake units but they seem to have no adjustments on the units. i just put this down to the enviroment they work in the salt water and salty air. was the brake unit you fitted from tvh?

FWIW I've never lubricated any splines on brake disc's fitted to BT forklifts over the years.

Only time I've seen discs stick is on OS when the thin shim is fitted between the metal splined hub & the brake disc itself.

Removing this shim always seems to cure the issue.

Ill have a good look at a LSR tomorrow while its got the covers removed for service.

You Explained the fault better than i did. The splined were checked and lubricated when the brake was changed. I am going to replace the brake disk again and check again for any causes. I guess it must has something to do with the splies. There should be no way the disk should still or bind to mind even if rusty.

Yes i've got the service manual.

It's not a fault I've ever seen or heard about.
IIRC it's also the exact same brake set up as the old LT ppt.

So if i'm understanding you correctly when the fault happens you go to drive, the brake coil pulls the metal disc up normally but the actual friction disc underneath sticks to the top of motor & prevents it from turning?

What are the splines like on the disc where it fixes on to the motor hub?

Was the spline hub on motor replaced with the brake unit?

I've seen some discs have a thin spacer between the disc splines & the actual metal hub on the motor, I've seen these stick before on the OS ( which is slightly different brake design ) but not on a LSR / LT.

You got the service manual for the LSR?

The brake assembly was replaced a couple of months ago. we had the probelm both before and after the new brake. The fault has only started happening in the last 6 month. The truck has been on site 3 years and the enviroment is exactly the same. I have spoke to BT rolatruc but i'm not getting any were.

I can't understand how the fibre brake disk shoud stick. Its a very strange fault.

I'm servicing a LSR's tomorrow, ill have a look at the brake set up for you.

I've never had any issues on any of my LSR's with the brake sticking even if the truck has stood for weeks / months unused.

I've also not heard of any problems about LSR brake's sticking.

You had the brake apart & cleaned it up / adjusted it correctly?

Has anybody else before you touched / worked on the brake?
