Clearing codes on Nissan MCUGL02F3LV

Had a hard code E27 on this ECM controlled Nissan. It`s a crankshaft positon sensor code, but sets with bad coil or plugs. Customer has replaced a coil and plugs...truck runs ok but the code is `latched`on. Unhookng battery will not clear the code. Nissan tech says you need a laptop to clear it. Is this correct?

What kind of operation are these trucks being used?

What i used to do all day now takes me all day to do.
Never got to finish it. The sister truck has it`s carriage busted off, so they used the one off the truck that cut out. I ended up using the throttle pot from it too. It`s going to be a parts truck now.
Thanks for all the help!

thanks guys! Just going back to the `Gulag` today..worst conditions possible for any lift trucks to run!
RC, i didn't even know there was a VCM under the right side. I see the Ecm and a power amp under the left side. I`ll check the right side today. Nissan tech has a manual for me, but he trembles at the thought of working on these trucks! Mr. T, ill put an email there one day! Thanks for the help, will keep you posted!

Ray if you still having problems with this unit, try swapping the VCM and not the ECM. You stated in your posts that you have swapped meter panel, ECM and directional switch but no mention of the VCM. If you have a sister truck, simply remove the plastic trim from right step inset and there you will see the VCM. The VCM works with the meter panel and shift selector switch. Check for corrosion on these connectors. Verify if the 2 VCM's have same part number and swap. If problem follows then your VCM is going south. If not then you have wiring issues. Check connector on directional switch harness and make sure the female terminals inside are ok and not loose and allowing an intermittent problem. while you have the instep plastics removed on both sides, check the ground wires that are bolted to frame. there are like 3 lugs grounded by one bolt. Make sure these are not corroded. Good luck! BTW what applications are these trucks in?

RayTech wants a schematic, but seems to refuse to either send an e-mail or add his e-mail address to his profile so someone could see it,,,, I have tried sending via my supernatural Extra Sensory Perception-Outbound, but his mind was busy with other things at the time... ;-)
Got any other ideas about how someone might get him a schematic? Won't his local Nissan Dealer sell you a manual? or print you a schematic that you can put under a microscope to read?

"it's not rocket surgery"
P22 came back. Swapped the engine module (left side under battery)
Code is intermittent. Has to be in the harness. Need a wiring diagram. ready to burn this ***!
Already swapped the FNR switch, still P22. Brake switch on good truck was disconnected too. No Fault on that truck

remove the jumper and unplug the coolant level indicator, the hour meter should reappear. I usually unplug them when the float drops to the bottom of a full recovery tank to return the hour meter function while I wait for the part, if the sending unit is corroded causing the float to drop you will need to replace the tank

Well Ray seems like you can get all that coconut oil off your hands after all the massaging you have done on that unit. Hope you have solved all the gremilins. The brake switch if not working right will dish up a E41 if it doesnt make up thus will need attention soon. What you are refering to i am thinking is actually the VCM the ECM is in engine compartment and the VCM is located behind plastic step cover.

right on RCAV8TOR,
by jumpering the coolant level switch, it caused the circle and exclamation mark. All makes react differently when plugs are undone. Some cause errors and other trucks may work fine. It`s like that with Nissan. Most trucks I work on would stop dead if you hit the brake switch. This one runs fine without any switch hooked up. That`s Nissan for you. Other trucks with low level switch broken are fooled by jumpering them, but this one doesn't like jumper. may need a certain resistance. P22 went away after spraying pins at ECM. All running good now, but have to do more work if the customer wants annual safety check!
Thank you all for the help!

if i'm not mistaken the round circle means the coolant level is low.
Is there a sensor in the coolant resivoir or on the side of the radiator on this unit? On the cats it means low coolant.

and the p22 code is something in the directional control
on the cat trucks it can also be triggered if the PDS (presence detection system) is triggered with the seat switch open.
check the seat switch circuit.

one other thing to consider too is if these trucks have the same relay box's like the cats do it could be a faulty relay or relay box.

on the cats we had a myriad of issues that were traced back to the bad relays or box's.

just some thoughts to throw at cha :o)

good luck

Do away with the jumper wire and you will have hours back. This will set the circle.

What i used to do all day now takes me all day to do.
I did not mention it, but I swapped the display first. same thing, exclamation red light, no hour meter, just a small circle. Swapped FNR switch, same thing, cut out drive. The coolant level sensor was busted, i jumpered it. Now that the truck wont recognize respond to the seat switch open, i suspect the ECM. After cleaning the connections, the truck changed and now runs with no codes or drive shut down.
Wife is tugging at me, new years party awaits>>>>
Happy new year all!

Working on a lift which has been tampered with by a non professional is frustrating but does have one caveat- it allows for unrestricted diagnostic time on the billing side of things.

Customers love technology- until they have to pay to fix it!
One more thing Ray as in reference to the laptop for this unit. This would be a plus at this moment. The laptop could be used to check the directional switch, manually fire directional selenoids and get an overall view of the system. Something to consider is to let a dealer tech check things out.

Ray just for laffs replace the meter panel with a sister unit if one is available. Install the meter panel of this truck onto another and see if problem follows. If engine is running good and is giving no E codes then i highly doubt the ECM (engine control module) is the problem. This unit has what is known as a canbus system and the P codes are reference to VCM (vehicle control module). The MP ( meter panel). VCM and ECM are linked by wire. The circle represents something as simple as clogged air filter, low coolant in radiator ect. Do you have access to an operators handbook on this unit? If so the circle will be displayed below or above those little icons that surrounds the hour meter spyglass. Sounds like you have a possible issue with the meter panel. Can you give me a serial number or chassis number?

What i used to do all day now takes me all day to do.
Tried a brake switch (had none) still no go. Have constant exclamation red light and no hour meter, just a circle. Tried FNR switch, no good, still had a P22 code and goes int neutral
Then checked connections at ECM, they looked good. Sprayed them with contact cleaner, then re tried. Now it runs without going into neutral, shows exclamation red light, no hour meter or code, but does not go into neutral even if deadman is open. Now, nothing stops it when in drive, no codes show. get off the seat, deadman light on but truck still stays in drive. Now it's driveable but unsafe! Want to swap the ECM but is it safe to swap without identity switching to the other truck? And how expensive is the ECM if it needs it? Still a ways to go...

yeah it's amazing what people try to get away with trying to save a buck only to have it cost them alot more in the end.
I agree if companies would dock their employees for tampering with equipment **** it up I'm sure alot of this would stop happening.

Wow, having your paycheck docked for arrogant stupidity is so beautiful.
I wished a few times that I could make some idiot pay for some of the junk I've had to straighten out.
But, I admit, I too use the internet to search for answers, but I think I go to a better site and with better reason than some of the wannabe wishtacoulds.

Great point swoop223 as i have ran into this as well anyone who makes lift repair a career. A great example that comes to mind is when when the Plat 2 trucks came out. There was a customer in my territory that bought several of them. I went to their location to perform the first 200 hr pm on these units and they had in house mechs. While there doing the "deeds"on these new trucks, i was approached by a few wanting to know the ins and outs of the new push buttons. I simply told them to refer to the operators handbook and it would explain the dash in detail. One grabbed a copy and apparently on his lunch break looked through it. After lunch this mech began asking me about tech code and what could be found out in that mode. I simply said i cant give out that info and especially the access code. A few days later i was working and got a call from my service manager wanting me to call this mech. Called the mech and he told me that he found out the access code via internet ( imagine finding something as such on the www) and accessed tech mode. He told me nothing worked on the truck and wondered if i could come and take a look. After almost 4 hrs and 200 mile trip, found 2 lifts acting same. Looked at the parameters/machine set up and told the man simply..........couriosity killed the pocketbook this time. Broke out my service manual and began selecting the factory defaults for their paticular model. After couple hours punching on both trucks dashes, got them going. The kicker of this was he was going to try and hide my service call and the readjustments i made to units. Even asked me as i was doing my paperwork if units could be covered under warranty. Sad to say that they ( the mechs company) went ahead and paid the service call but the mech had a hefty 100/wk deducted from his paycheck. Moral of story here is if you don't know how the thing works, dont mess with it.
