serial is AT8900790
4.3 GM pre-emissions
mast number- c70a47

the problem im having is the the lift seems very spongy
tilt and everything else seems OK
with a load it drops about 8 inches (about 20cm) slowly then stops drifting down altogether

this unit has a large accumulator mounted on the mast
im suspecting its causing the issue
anyone have any info on this esp on how to test the accumulator, i think it lost its nitrogen charge

ive seen a similar unit in a yale parts book but im not sure if its the same exact unit
couldnt find anything from cat on it

any other ideas would be helpful

When I first sign on for forklift.com I was in Texas working for MCFA. After the restructing program in 1996 I moved to Georgia & jsut had time to figure out how to get my profile updated.

Same person, just older & uglier.

Sounds like you have the piston type.

i was thinkin of pulling it and capping it off
the trucks came this way when the guy bought them 2nd hand
these guys arent rough but they def aint easy on em
they do heavy awkward stuff and its very busy (metalizing) so im not sure if removing it from the circuit would be best in the long run for this application

it is a long cylinder up the backside of the right mast rail
it has what looks like a schrader valve with a small cap and a metal bracket protecting it on top

justin - msot accumulators I have seen are eithr nitorgen filled bag type (acorn shaped - short & fat) or piston type (usually cylinderical in shape). The main difference is in the hydraulic oil capacity , ie 1 quart up to 1 gallon for large forlifts. With the muli-staged cylinder mast designed of today - accumulators are for the most part ineffective & can cause mast cylinder sequencing issues.

Could you remove the accumulator from the circuit and try the machine then? This will narrow down your search. The accumulator is only there to help cushion shock loads.
