Transmission input shaft question

serial f1700048 Just pulled a 4g52 out of this rig and the input shaft stayed in the pilot bearing of the flywheel and came out with engine, Now were installing engine and trying to figure out what is supposed to hold the shaft from going in and out of transmission, there is one expander ring in one of the many grooves and thats where it was when removed, the shaft goes in way too far. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks
