Crown build a nice reliable truck, but the C5 is a home market attempt to break out of being 'just electrics'. In Europe its too big, too noisy, too old fashioned to take off. Totally outclassed by JH/Linde/Toyota IC products.
Point taken budman im comparing the C5 to the Nissan Mitsi/Cat trucks we get over here and I stand by what i said its a better machine. I've worked on all 3 the build quality and reliabilty of the Crown is far better
Lifter01: There's a difference between the lifts supplied by MCFA & MCFE. Here on this side of the large pond. We only use the Nissan K-21 & K-25 powertrain in the smaller lifts. As for diesels we're still using the Mitsu S4S and S6S. On larger LP lifts, we use the GM 4.3L V-6 with dual coolers. Now we have the tier 4 Perkins in the larger lifts. Also on the electric lifts from MCFE you have the Rocla build products and here we have the Junheinrich Cats. Big difference.
Oldforker I'm very serious. Dont know about on your side of the world but over here Misi/Cat Nissan don't have a good rep at all very tier 2 machines poor buld quality unreliable power-train especially in the FG40N the Nissan 6 cyl lump cracking cyl heads transmission failures lousy electronic park brakes which failed (and that was on every FG40N we supplied). The build quality of the C% was far supirior to both. Yes we had teething faults but nothing like I had when the new mitsi trucks came out. The biggest problem with the C5 was parts cost and still is until Crown sort that out you wont see too many around.
swing by anytime... the trick is to make the square fit INTO the fork... lol.
hey edward, i have a wheelbarrow i can't seem to get this square wheel to fit on, can you help? ;o)
I would not consider a lack of complaints on an open forum like this as any sign of lack of problems, more likely the fact that some brands that have stricter control over the [supposed] free speech rights of their employees, have done a better job of managing to prevent posting replies to those concerns.
IMHO, some brands seem to have less participation of their employees, especially their US based employees. I notice a shortage of US based Crown and/or Toyota techs answering questions about their respective brands, and I somehow doubt that those brands have somehow managed to provide the answers to the concerns, somewhere that everyone else has found and not ever mentioned. {thankfully there are some techs in places like 'down under' that step up and assist, thanks Crownie}
We rarely notice when something is not, but do notice when something is. I have never considered that there is -no- shark in the water fountain, but if there ever was, I am sure I would notice.
There sure are days when I sure wish I could work only on wheelbarrows.
I have 30+ years in the industry the first half on just electrics and the rest on just about everything else. I will work on a wheelbarrow if needed. And...I am pretty good on them too.
Re lifter01's comments - better than a Mitsi or a Nissan???? Are you serious!?
Why would you install the inspection/fill plug on the back side of the differential where it is virtually impossible to view and fill ? And make the Bonnet out of steel where the weight of it makes it a two person job to remove it ??
I hear you Nelson C. But even us old IC mechanics have had to bone up on Electronics due to all of the computers & ECM's that are used on all of the new IC lifts. It's only fair that the electric mechanics to have to cross train into the IC world! LOL
I have been a tech for 40 yrs. Worked on most everything out there in my time. IMHO I feel your right about electric techs having to change a little to work on I.C. trucks. There are also some areas in any country where electric trucks are few and I.C. is king. Techs in those areas, I bet would not have a problem working on the C-5.
Being an old Clark guy, I compare the C-5 engine to the C-500 engine. Derived from a diesel with balancers, etc. But with all the new electronics of todays emission standards.
most electric tech's i know that do only electric trucks generally do not like working on IC trucks.
crown being mainly an electric truck manufacturer and thats all they've done for years now coming out with IC trucks....
its understandable there will be resistance umong thier ranks to have to adapt to this new venue in their range of work.
