What Bulldog is saying is put timing light on now, as is, with advance wire disconnected. Do you see the marks line up with 8 deg?
Its very common for the distributor to be re-installed out of phase, off by one tooth. Timing is so advanced that it wont run with any more advance, but runs decent unhooked from from comp. If you have the dist in correctly and show close to 8 deg, then the ignition module may be fried. Always use a ground jumper to dist body when turning it to change timing. It loses ground when the bolt is loosened and can fry the ignition module.
When removing any distributor, there should always be 3 witness marks. One for base, 2nd for rotor position with dist still in, 3rd for final rotor position as distributor is pulled out. You need this last position on installation to get it back properly.
With the advance wire disconnected it should be 8 degrees. That would be your base timing.
Dont know what else to do.
The good thing is that the lift is operational until we come up with a solution to the extreme advance problem when the wire is connected.
I don't like the idea of that but like I said it is running and very well at that.
I hope its a bad sensor that we haven't located yet because the controller is a big big ticket item. **** it may be a simple bad connection somewhere.

With the advance wire disconnected it should be 8 degrees. That would be your base timing.
8 degrees is spec with the advance wire to the dist. connected but we couldn't check it because it would not run long enough.
Runs like a top with the wire disconnected though.
Still researching before going back to waist more time on it.
At least now we can use it.
With it running what was the timing?
Will check it out but if the map sensor was bad, then wouldn't that just cause it to run rough and surge.
The only sensor on that unit be the map sensor. I would start at it.

Do you know the full model and serial number? I can figure it out? What I am looking for wouod be a round connector at the left rear side of the engine that would be in a white housing. This would let me know if it's a tier fuel system.
Not sure what fuel system but no check eng. light
Which fuel system is this unit running? Tier III or TIER 4? Check engine light on?

Disconnect the wire to the distributor and she purrs like a kitten.
Now gotta find which sensor is bad.
